Dental Scaling & Root Planing Etobicoke

Plaque is a sticky substance that forms on the tooth surface and is packed with bacteria. Over time, plaque can harden and turn into calculus (also known as tartar), which can lead to significant dental issues if left untreated.
Bacteria in plaque and calculus irritate the tissues in your mouth. Your body's response to these irritants causes gum inflammation, bleeding, recession, and eventually bone loss around the teeth, resulting in periodontal (gum) disease.
The earliest stage of periodontal disease is called gingivitis, which is reversible. Gingivitis is characterized by bleeding gums, especially when brushing or flossing. If not addressed, gingivitis can progress into periodontitis, a more severe form of gum disease that leads to gum deterioration, bone loss, and potentially tooth loss.
Scaling and root planing are the most effective treatments for periodontal disease. Scaling involves removing calculus and plaque from both above and below the gum line. Root planing smooths the root surface, removing any remaining calculus and ensuring proper cleaning.
If a large amount of plaque and calculus needs to be removed, your dentist will numb the area to make the procedure more comfortable. A combination of sonic and hand instruments is used to effectively remove deposits. Sonic instruments remove the bulk of plaque and calculus, while hand instruments ensure that all surfaces of the tooth are thoroughly cleaned and free of bacteria. You may experience some sensitivity or soreness for a few days after the treatment, which can be relieved with over-the-counter pain medication.
A follow-up visit with Alderwood Dental is typically scheduled four weeks after treatment to assess the improvement in your gum health. Additional visits, typically every 3 to 6 months, will help monitor the disease and maintain healthy gum and bone levels. The goal is to eliminate bacterial inflammation and reduce periodontal pockets around the teeth, preventing plaque and calculus buildup and preserving bone health.
